Getting Your Metro Detroit Home Ready for Winter: A Renovation Checklist

October 2026 · Ashor Construction

Late October in Metro Detroit is the last calm stretch before winter sets in. Freeze-thaw cycles, lake-effect snow, and sub-zero nights are coming, and the work you do now is what separates a comfortable winter from an expensive one. Here's the checklist we walk homeowners through this time of year.

1. Seal the envelope: windows, doors, and drafts

Before the first hard freeze, go room to room on a windy day and feel for drafts around windows and exterior doors. Worn weatherstripping and cracked caulk are cheap fixes that make a real difference in comfort — and they're often the first thing we spot during an estimate. If you have older single-pane windows that fog up or ice over, a replacement is worth pricing out now rather than enduring another winter.

2. Check your basement before the freeze

Michigan basements take a beating in winter. Look for the warning signs now: musty smells, white chalky residue (efflorescence) on the walls, water stains, or paint that's bubbling. Small moisture issues get worse with winter snowmelt and spring rain, not better. If you're thinking about finishing your basement, winter is actually the right time to plan — and the right time to get moisture issues properly addressed before any drywall goes up.

3. Look up: attic insulation and ventilation

Ice dams — those ridges of ice along your roofline — start in the attic, not on the roof. Inadequate insulation lets warm air escape, melts the snow above, and refreezes it at the eaves. The fix is straightforward: consistent insulation coverage and proper ventilation. If your upstairs bedrooms run noticeably warmer than the rest of the house in winter, that's the sign.

4. Kitchen and bathroom fixes before the holidays

Thanksgiving and the holidays put your kitchen and bathrooms under maximum load. That dripping faucet, the tired guest bath, the countertop that's seen better days — small upgrades now are faster and cheaper than emergency fixes in December. And if you've been considering a full kitchen or bathroom renovation, getting on a contractor's schedule this fall means the work can wrap before the new year.

5. Plan next spring's addition this winter

Thinking about a home addition for next year? Winter is design and permit season. Drawings, permits, and scheduling take time, and contractors book spring slots fast. Homeowners who start the conversation in November or December are the ones whose additions are underway when the weather breaks.
